How to resolve Hybrid Connection Wizard and Click to Run applications failing to download and run

This has been something that has bothered me for years.
You need to download and run the Hybrid Connection Wizard, and it fails.
You need to download the latest version of OneDrive for Business, and it fails.
There was no point in even trying in Chrome or any browser that wasn't Internet Explorer.
The underlying click to run / click once application would work on some computers and fail on others.

I came across the issue again on the weekend when I was trying to run the HCW for a new tenancy I created. It failed. I then tried to download it directly via the URL to the Azure hosted file which would sometimes work, but it failed this time.

Extensive searching took me to this great article - Link - by Paul Robicahaux.
And at last I had a permanent solution - File Association -

As explained in Paul's article, the permanent solution is to edit what the Default Program is used for the 'applicaton' file type.

To do this, open Control Panel - Default Programs - Associate a file type or protocol with a program
Scroll till you find - .application and .appref-ms
Select and change the program to Internet Explorer -

Once I had associated the two file types with Internet Explorer, the Hybric Connection Wizard downloaded and installed as expected.

FWIW I didn't confirm this with OneDrive for Business as the update / download system is much more stable than it was 18 months ago when I remember it being a real pain trying to get the click once / click to run, to work correctly.

I hope this helps ease the pain around installing the HCW.
